These two pictures are of the work from my last kiln firing on Friday. Unfortunately I lost a tree dinner plate during firing otherwise there would be two complete tree sets. The three blue pasta bowls are following previous work which is inspired by the ocean waves near Tathra NSW. The tree dinnerware are what I see everyday up here in the mountains.
I have been playing around with dinnerware that have sculptural elements included. This piece is a reflection of our throwaway consumerist society and the impact of that on the natural environment that we live in.
I have just taken out of the kiln matching side plates to go with my wave design dinner plates. I now need to work on pasta bowls to complete the set. Maybe cups or a larger platter or bowl as well. Making the plates doesn’t take too long but hand painting the waves takes ages and a steady hand…..
Just took these hanging ceramic planters out of the kiln this morning. It is a tin blue brush on glaze. I gave them two coats instead of three, so instead of blue bowls with brown edges, they are a rusty brown with blue splotches and look similar to the corrugated iron of my studio walls. I like them, they would look nice with grey blue succulents in them.
On our last summer holiday we were visiting Mimosa National Park in NSW. One day we went to one of our favourite beaches Middle Beach and watched some massive waves crashing against the rocks. I quickly did a black ink drawing and these are the pieces I have made from that drawing.
I haven’t been here for a while, as I took summer off making ceramics, and since starting again I have been flat chat trying to get some work done. We went away to Tathra this summer and I did some drawings of large waves crashing on the rocks. These have been some of the inspiration for some new work I am doing for an exhibition at Tent 29 at Chewton during the Castlemaine festival.
These don’t look that big in the photo but they were huge waves, and we were getting wet!
This is blue bottle or water bottle. I have also made some small cups, side plates and bowls.
Last Friday I was part of the first Melbourne Etsy pop art market, Etsy Night Out Melbourne! It was really busy and a great introduction for me to having a stall in Melbourne rather than out in the sticks! This is a photo of my trusty helper!
Had a lovely day at our local market today. Beautiful warm weather and lots of happy customers. Have to get really busy this week and make lots more work for another market next week.
We live on a flower farm and the last of our Australian native waratahs have just finished. Today I made two dishes for friends using the white and red waratah as a decorative feature. I copy the waratahs as a botanical artist copies flowers. I need the flower in front of me and can’t work from a photo, so as they have just finished flowering I realised I needed to make these pieces quickly. They are yet to be fired or glazed, so will look quite different when fired.
Have just made a few ceramic rings. My daughter found a lovely little butterfly cocoon down at our dam and I used it as inspiration for these rings.
