Short video interview with me for the Etsy Local Market
A few weeks ago I was picked to be interviewed for the Etsy Local Melbourne Market. This market has been organised by Melbourne Etsy sellers to actually get us out from behind our computers and meet our customers in the flesh. I had to bring all my work down to Melbourne and set up my stall, as if it was the real day of the market. I had my makeup done by a lovely woman, something that I am definitely not used to, but made me look presentable! I was quite nervous and there was a bit of waiting around, but the crew there made me very comfortable and in the end I just figured I had to be myself, as that’s all I had to give. The funniest thing was when the video was first showed to me, I thought they had dubbed my voice! I had no idea I sounded like that…

This group of bottles I based on the contours of hills and mountains at night. I try to place them as if they are people in a group mingling.

trees and water
These two pictures are of the work from my last kiln firing on Friday. Unfortunately I lost a tree dinner plate during firing otherwise there would be two complete tree sets. The three blue pasta bowls are following previous work which is inspired by the ocean waves near Tathra NSW. The tree dinnerware are what I see everyday up here in the mountains.
Who is the table set for?
I have been playing around with dinnerware that have sculptural elements included. This piece is a reflection of our throwaway consumerist society and the impact of that on the natural environment that we live in.
Waves dinner set
I have just taken out of the kiln matching side plates to go with my wave design dinner plates. I now need to work on pasta bowls to complete the set. Maybe cups or a larger platter or bowl as well. Making the plates doesn’t take too long but hand painting the waves takes ages and a steady hand…..
Rusty ceramic planters
Just took these hanging ceramic planters out of the kiln this morning. It is a tin blue brush on glaze. I gave them two coats instead of three, so instead of blue bowls with brown edges, they are a rusty brown with blue splotches and look similar to the corrugated iron of my studio walls. I like them, they would look nice with grey blue succulents in them.

On our last summer holiday we were visiting Mimosa National Park in NSW. One day we went to one of our favourite beaches Middle Beach and watched some massive waves crashing against the rocks. I quickly did a black ink drawing and these are the pieces I have made from that drawing.

I invited two artists to install their work alongside my recent experimentations at Tent 29 for the Castlemaine State Festival open studio program 2015. The exhibition is on until Sunday March 22nd in Chewton, a short drive from Castlemaine and 120kms from Melbourne, Victoria. King Lake based ceramicist Yvette De Lacy installed an exhibition of new stoneware thrown and hand built works titled ‘Aquifer.’ De Lacy says, “ the work is about the drawing of water for life and the environmental impacts of when water is scarce.” The bottle shapes are inspired by child hood memories of digging up ink and medicine bottles. black mountain pot
A few weeks ago I made this double opening black mountain vase for the upcoming ‘Stepping Up’ exhibition to be held in Canberra during the Australian Ceramics Association Ceramic Triennial. This was the first time I had used Clayworks stoneware terracotta and unfortunately a small crack appeared after its second firing. This shot is while it is still wet and unfired.
So I have started on another pot. This time in my usual white porcelain stoneware Clayworks JB3. The piece can be no bigger than 15cm x 15cm, so I hope it shrinks a bit, as it is 18cm high at the moment.
After making the form I painted on black underglaze. I then inscribed the mountains using a wire loop tool. I really like this piece and hope it fires well. Fingers crossed.
